Are One-Day Wellness Retreats Worth Your Money? Let’s Investigate

There’s an added bonus to many of these experiences. Often, there’s an opportunity to hone in on something specific, in addition to universal wellness practices. In May, I attended a singles retreat led by The Soul Institute’s Adora Winquist. The objective was to focus on manifesting our soulmate, while incorporating other general wellness experiences. Later in the year, I was invited to a one-day wellness retreat centered on embracing one’s sexuality. Just today, in fact, I saw an email about The Art of Aging Gratefully, a one-day retreat in Sept. with wellness and skincare experts, at the Fairmont Spa Century Plaza. For Goel’s part, her niche is pure relaxation. The gift bags at each of these events also center around the greater theme of the experience.

Meet Corey Spiegel | Founder / CEO Light House

Human life doesn’t come with a manual. There are no set instructions when things get emotionally challenging. Light House makes these conversations relatable and accesible. I worked in the corporate world for 25 years and when I was considering leaving the entertainment world to start my own business, I wanted to surround myself with smart and open-minded women who could share the ups and downs of what this might look like for me. I had reported in professionally to a “Board of Directors” and thought conceptually every woman needs her own “Board of Directors,” not in a business sense, but for her personal life. Despite having a tight circle of friends, I realized it’s simply not the same dynamic when you ask your BFF’s to problem-solve. It’s too biased, too soft, too one-sided. Often, an objective audience works better than a dearest confident. So I created Light House – a place where women find clarity, wisdom, and perspective. Today, we’re a diverse and inclusive global community of women having honest, authentic, and meaningful conversations about real life.

Trusting Your Gut & Banking on Yourself with Corey Spiegel of Light House

It wasn’t that long ago that Corey Spiegel had an idea that would change her life. She thought about it, planned it, and when she knew her gut could trust it, she banked on herself and did it. She left corporate America behind and started a community. A diverse, inclusive community of real women talking about real issues, challenges, and solutions. Light House, is a virtual and in-person confidential space to meet other people just like you and learn from those who are very different from you. Its a community that I’m a part of and as a participant, I can tell you its a special place. It’s hard making adult friendships, especially trusted adult friendships. Corey’s genius made a space where women can blossom, at whatever stage of life they are in. Listen in and check out Light House yourself.

Exploring Life & Business with Corey Spiegel of Light House

Nothing in life that is truly worthwhile is a smooth road. You have to come to terms with the amount of effort it takes, the countless hours you will work and the lack of team players you’ll have around you to bounce things off of. Let’s be real and come to terms with the struggle. It’s not a friendly companion but it is going to be along for the ride. It will be part of your story. A vital part. I look at my struggles as an ascending stairway – the higher I get, the more difficult the climb. Every entrepreneur goes through this process whether they admit it or not. The more we can talk about it and normalize this conversation, the easier it is to realize you’re not the only one going through it. This is precisely why I am so incredibly drawn to running a vibrant community of intelligent women who will lift, advise and support each another (…).

Ep. 64 - Building Your Personal Board of Directors and the Power of Community with Corey Spiegel, Founder of Light House

After spending over 25 years as a senior executive working in the entertainment space, she always wondered why there wasn't a mommy and me type of group for those in the later stages of life? At work she was always reporting to several Board of Directors and then it clicked, why couldn’t she have her own Board of Directors for her personal life? And after 25+ years she left the corporate world to launch Light House and help support other women find their personal board of directors.

In this episode we talk all about her journey and inspiration behind Light House, why having a personal Board of Directors is important, being a mom of teenagers, and how she prioritizes self-care (especially movement, clean eating and sleep) in her life after losing 82 pounds, plus her favorite skin care products.

One of my favorite quotes from the episode: "You're not meant to do life alone and you don't have to.”

I Needed a CEO for my Life!

Everyone needs accountability in our lives. Especially entrepreneurs. We need that to keep us on task, keep us on the rails, keep us moving forward. But who are the best people to keep us accountable? This is a question Corey Spiegel had when she started her business. She didn't want to ask family or friends - they were too supportive. She needed a community of other business owners who would tell it to her straight. But she couldn't find it.

So she started her own community. And now these shining stars are lighting the way for other women entrepreneurs.

Meet Corey Spiegel: Founder of Light House – a network of whip-smart women learning and transforming together with the guidance of trusted experts.

We had the good fortune of connecting with Corey Spiegel, Founder of Light House, and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Corey, how do you think about risk?
Taking a risk requires a great deal of thought and courage to face the fear of the unknown. I was looking to grow professionally and debated all of the avenues that were available to me to help me achieve both resiliency and my future goals. Ultimately, I decided on one seemingly simple yet scary choice to start my own business. I was tired of working for other people and bringing to light their visions for their companies. I wanted that for myself. I wanted to bank on my own efforts and talent making decisions I knew would be best for my company. I thought about what it would be like if I didn’t take the risk and that notion was far worse to me. I knew I would regret the missed opportunity. Don’t get me wrong, there was a lot of fear involved – fear of failure, fear of change and the uncertainty of it all without a safety net beneath me…

How to Care for Aging Parents When You Can’t Be There

im-282341.jpeg

When Corey Spiegel’s 75-year-old mother fell and broke her hip and wrist in November and needed emergency surgery, Ms. Spiegel scrambled to figure out how to transport her home from rehab. She interviewed caregivers over FaceTime and arranged for groceries and medical supplies to be delivered.

It would have been easier if she could have traveled from her Los Angeles home to be with her mom, Gail Wolfberg, in New Jersey but Covid-19 made that nearly impossible.

Caring for aging loved ones has always been difficult, and the pandemic has only complicated it—especially when family members live in different cities or states. More people than ever are in caregiving roles: Nearly one in five American adults are providing unpaid care to another adult, according to the National Alliance for Caregiving and the AARP.

Friday Series Brings Women Together for Self-Care During COVID-19

Screen Shot 2020-08-09 at 9.59.19 PM.png

LOS ANGELES – On a recent bright summer day, a handful of women have gathered at a private residence for the latest installment of Feel Good Fridays.

The gathering is a series of classes that Light House founder Corey Spiegel created for women to relax, relate, and release.

“It's really about self-care, it's about establishing your own self-care practice, which is why we do them every Friday,” said Spiegel.

Spiegel started Light House in 2019 to provide safe spaces for women to gather, be vulnerable, and discuss everyday relateable life stages.

She pivoted online during the pandemic, but started Feel Good Fridays in June so small groups of women could talk about their lives during this uncertain time.

“It's really nice to be able to put the phone down and take that minute for yourself to kind of get out there and feel like you're not living life alone,” said Spiegel.

Each week a guest speaker leads the discussion on topics like self-empowerment, where the women are given advice on how to crank up the self-love.

True Cross, a first-time attendee, came to unplug from life and connect with the group for 90 minutes.

“We are juggling a lot of plates, especially parents who are also having to homeschool at this time. So our nerves are frayed, we're being taxed in ways we never have before so just taking a beat to slow down,” Cross said.

Community of Businesswomen Helping Women Formed in LA

LOS ANGELES — There’s food, fire, and friends. Well, not friends per se, and that’s a good thing.

“Your closest girlfriends are fantastic, but they’re going to be your cheerleaders and at the end of the day you want an honest opinion from like-minded women,” Corey Spiegel said.

Spiegel left a 20-plus year career in digital advertising and marketing to create her own business, Light House. She wanted a community for like-minded women to share, advise, and inspire.

“In my career, I always reported to a board of directors, so when I was deciding to start this, I thought 'I wish I had a board of directors to weigh in on this decision.' I had two kids. Instead of talking to family, I wanted to talk to other women who had been through this before. And I thought, 'Why can’t I have a board of directors for my personal life?'” she said.

Indeed, it’s warranted, because women starting businesses is serious business. A women-owned businesses report, commissioned by American Express, says the number of women-owned businesses has increased around 3,000 percent in the last nearly 50 years.

Spiegel believes the best way she can grow as a businesswoman is to bounce ideas off other businesswomen and get real authentic honest feedback—like it or not.

She created roundtables of entrepreneurs and business owners to share strategies, ask questions, and learn all angles and aspects of the business world—all from the comfort of couches in her home.

At one meeting, celebrity skincare expert Nurse Jamie shared her story of creating and growing her business into what is now a global brand.

Spiegel moderates the roundtables with topics ranging from making smart financial choices to caring for your aging parents.

“You’re getting an unbiased opinion from thought leaders, intelligent women that have paved the way before you,” she said.

After weeks and weeks of classes together, these women may leave friends, but first, it's all business. That's what they came for.

EPISODE SUMMARY

Meet Corey Spiegel, mother of two teenagers and founder of Light House, a new kind of community for women. In this episode, we have real talk about motherhood, careers and the joy of finding work that feeds the soul.

EPISODE NOTES

Judgement free....what a beautiful phrase. For some reason, life brings judgement. Whether people are judging others or we are judging ourselves, our brains just naturally go to the negative sometimes. It's easy to slip into judgement, but it's a negative energy that really does not belong in life. That is why I loved the conversation I had with Corey Spiegel, a mom of two who went on a career exploration and decided to create an organization focused on creating a judgement free community. Light House is a "new community of like-minded women who get together to share, advise, inspire and help each other navigate life in a judgement free zone". Her organization holds various sessions for women focused on every day necessities like money management, aging gracefully, being a mom and more. She brings together women to talk, learn and grow together. I love it!

Today, women are doing incredible things in all fields – from science and technology to finance, law, business, athletics and more.  With the Trailblazers series, we hope to highlight and celebrate female role models, encourage more equal and just representation in the media, and help foster a more tight-knit community locally helping women find mentors, business partners, friends and more.

Meet Trailblazer Corey Spiegel

personal_photo-25-1000x600.jpeg

Today we’d like to introduce you to Corey Spiegel.

Corey, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started my career in advertising in NYC. I was immediately drawn to the creative aspect, the sales process, and the Fortune 500 brands I was lucky enough to work on. I spent years as a senior executive working in the entertainment space – Playboy, National Geographic, Warner Bros., Extra, Ellen, Rotten Tomatoes and TMZ to name a few overseeing digital sales, product integrations, social media and brand partnerships. I learned a ton at these companies but after so many years in the trenches, I decided it was time to start my own business in a space that combines my skillset with my passion points outside of advertising. This led me to create Light House.

Light House is a modern-day book club where you are the author and the chapters are your real life. We meet in beautiful, relaxing spaces to create fresh new communities of like-minded and yet diverse women who get together to share, advise, inspire and help each other navigate life in a judgment-free zone. We feature hour-long interactive sessions with a curated list of topics that resonate with today’s modern woman. The connections are genuine and the conversations are real. This is a place for women to share their stories and seek insight, wisdom and perspective. As a married mom with two teenagers, I created a place I would want to go to share experiences with other women who don’t have the same bias a close girlfriend or relative might have.
